Viola bow - Dominique Peccatte 1840 - 45
Unfortunately with this is last blog, the series dedicated to the historical bows have come to an end. But certainly we do not end quietly, closing the quartet with a beautiful viola bow by Dominique Peccatte that we will compare with the violin one described some weeks ago .
If you remember , speaking about the violin bow I had stressed the impulsiveness and almost crude aggressivity of the lines, due to the very strong and dominant character of this author. It was the Vuillaume period , with whom he has never discussed for obvious reasons, but had to make a great effort of self-control. But as happens with felines , trying to dominate their aggressiveness just make them more furious.
This week's bow probably belongs to the next period. He took over Lupot II's workshop, he started his own business and his fame is growing rapidly so the feline relaxes a little!
The care he puts into cutting bevels and in the total development of the bow, reveal a greater emphasis on accuracy, due to a more independent employment status, therefore relaxing in some way.
Obviously it is still a Peccatte, therefore with a very firm and strong character , and being totally original, he could not avoid to have the classic "S", his brand!
Go and see the other article ( DOMINIQUE PECCATTE ; THE PURE ONE )!
Although he was trying to become more refined, he was still him, and even if the results were coming, he was not yet at his maximum manuality. Though these cheeks are more balanced than the other one, we still see a lot of differences in the working proceed. The right side (top) is very flat, dug in the center and has a small depression on the arrival of the shoe. The left is the opposite, rounded and with the maximum curve at the center, exactly where the other one has a hollow.
Even on the frog there is a greater sophistication of the work. The throat is always aggressive with the upper corner that develops very much forward, but is more carefully carried out and less impulsive than usual.
The ring is as always very important and it fits perfectly the proportions of the frog. The slide is conical and the knee is in two parts, fastened with a small nail.
The shot below is very interesting, because it gives us the confirmation that this bow was built by a right-handed person. Look at the different thickness between the upper and lower part of the ebony. He was more conmfortable with the left side therefore he dug it more.
I must say that this button has really surprised me, especially the collar, double and the latter very fine and regular. Too much for Peccatte, so to induce some doubts in me, then I see the completely arbitrary placement of the nails and I realize that it can be nobody but Him.
